Who is Allen Recycling?

Allen Recycling consists of IT professionals who’ve shifted focus to IT Asset Disposal, an often ignored but very important part of our field.  Many of our employees have worked in IT support, project management, telecommunications, databases or simply been dedicated hobbyists.

Most of our revenue comes from refurbishing or recycling the junk we take from your company.  You may have outgrown the usefulness of your equipment, but there may be someone who still can use it.  If not, we break it down for the circuit boards, wiring and metal.

Have more questions?

What About My Data? Will it be secure?

We wipe hard drives to US Department of Defense standards and/or destroy them. Your data is safe with us.

My industry compliance standards require Certificates of Data Destruction. Can you provide them?

Yes! Certificates of Data Destruction are available for a nominal fee.  For that fee, we shift the liability risk to us. and we only charge the fee if you need the Certificate of Data Destruction.

What kind of stuff do you take?

Just about anything technology related. Pretty much if it plugs in, runs on batteries, is a battery or is used with any of those items, we can accept it. PCs, monitors, printers, scanners, audio/video, servers, cables (we *love* cables), etc. If you’re not sure, feel free to ask.

As of now, we *cannot* accept CRT (old style tube) and rear projection televisions, items that use mercury, such as fluorescent bulbs, old thermostats, thermometers, etc.  We also cannot accept biohazard or radioactive material.

Why can’t I just throw away electronics?

It’s a bad idea.  If your equipment stores sensitive data you are at a security risk.  Electronics are made of toxic stuff which contaminate soil and water as they break down over time. If you want clean water for your kids and grandchildren, do your part and recycle electronics.

Can I wait for “Recycling Day” in my town?

Sure you can, but why?  It’s taking up valuable space until then.  You have to move it yourself.  You have to remember the date and location…and what about the security of your data?  We take care of all of it for you.

What happens to the stuff after you take it?

We evaluate the equipment for its viability.  Newer equipment is securely wiped and refurbished or disassembled for parts and resold.  Older equipment is sold for scrap to recover metals and other valuable base components.

How much does it cost for me to get rid of my electronic waste?

If you bring your e-waste to us, there is no charge of us to collect or recycle it.  Pickup charges depend on the distance, quantity and quality of the items, what type of vehicle and how many bodies we’ll need to accomplish the task.  We try to keep trip charges as low as possible.

I need a pickup. What can I do to minimize my cost?

Organize your e-waste as well as possible, preferably in a single, easily accessed location.  If you have multiple floors, move the items to the first floor as close as possible to the exits you want us to use.  If you palletize items, it makes it easier for everyone.

We will help you clean up a big mess if you need us to, but please understand that trucks require fuel and employees require paychecks.  The cost will correspond to the effort we need to make to collect your items.

Where do I drop off my e-waste?

You may bring unwanted items to our shop at 1218 Batchelor St, West Columbia, 29169, 11A-6P, Monday thru Friday.  We rent part of an old school and are located on the North St end of the building.  Look for a big sign that belongs in an amusement park.  Our shop is behind the brown fence.

If you have more than a carload of stuff, please let us know you are coming.

If you only have a few items, you may also leave them for no cost at The UPS Store, 7001 St Andrews Rd. Columbia, SC 29212 (near Harbison shopping area).  Tell them the items are for Allen Recycling.  Please note: This is the *only* UPS Store location with which we have agreement.
